The session today was based around The Lake Poets and the children used the language of The Lake Poets in their own original compositions. It was a different way of working and took some time to get into this style of writing. But there was much success. I share a couple of the poems here. Of course all the poems will be featured in the anthology I will put together at the end of the project.
A Bit of Peace Worn path, trod by many weary traveller but not today In the forest, damp with early morning dew surrounded by transparant light, the sway of a duvet of bluebells, the murmur of the beck, the hum of distant traffic, I find my bit of peace. Jake Armstrong Midday Woods In awe of fading light, at every turn a new surprise is revealed Nature's power well trod the path Cloud upon cloud, sun tries to burn away the mist Crumbling path, dead leaves clog the eyes Bare and steep, Oh! watch your step Shadows follow every move The loneliness of mist Abbie Mitchell Second Broughton session and I said that we could do some rhythm and rhyming. This time the children looked outside their expeience and into the wider world to think about where they would like to live or visit. The poems had a ABCB rhyme pattern. I showed the children how to use the rhymezone website to help with finding rhymes. Good rhyming is not easy as the children found out and I was not going to let them get away with using words just for the sake of the rhyme. Concentration, Frustration - Certainly some hard thinking going on
What a lovely morning we all had together, lots of discussion finding out about the likes and dislikes of the children before writing poems about fears. The teacher divided the class into two and I had a session with each individual group. Each group wrote a joint poem and likes and dislikes then each child wrote a poem. We used a poem about princesses fears as a stimulus for our own poems. Discussion then on to the writing task. It Happened Last Night…Or did it?
Last night I played cards with my mum And then the cards flew around the room Is that all? Last night I had jacket potatoes, chicken nuggets and fish fingers for tea And then I fell back and all the food landed on my dad’s bald head Is that all? Last night I went to football, tackled Ashtyn and scored a goal And then I fell over and my leg was bleeding Is that all? Last night I played football at the football club And then there was a snail on the football and it scored a goal Is that all? Last night I dressed up my dogs in clothes And then they bounced on the trampoline and itched their tummies Is that all? Last night I went on my trampoline and done a flip And then I saw a flying pig, bounced really high and caught it Is that all? Last night I stroked my guinea pigs And then they did a back flip Is that all? Last night I had a picnic with my dad in the garden And then I ate a juicy apple and a worm went up my nose Is that all? Last night I sat on my bean bag listening to One Direction on my IPod And then they suddenly appeared in my room Is that all? Last night I played with my Lego and made a dog and a car and an aeroplane And then they came to life and the aeroplane crashed into the car Is that all? Last night I went to see my dog at mygrandparents And then he flew out of the window and brought back a steak in his mouth Is that all? Last night I went to Street dancing and made some good moves And then the door opened and a dog said “Hello” Is that all? Last night I was playing on a shooting game on my XBOX And then the TV started to walk Is that all? Last night I was watching YooHoo on the TV And then my TV flew into space Is that all? Last night I played with my puppet show And then my puppet went into a spaceship and landed on Uranus Is that all? Last night my mam couldn’t go to aerobics because her neck was in spasm And then her head fell off Is that all? Last night I went boxing and got punched in the face And then my head fell off…Or did it? READ THE POEM OUT LOUD AND GET THE CLASS TO SAY THE 'IS THAT ALL' BITS At Grasslot I worked with the whole class. We wrote a joint poem called 'It happened last night'. Each child wrote a piece of the poem. There was much discussion about real events and fantasy with each child coming up with a real incident and then a fictitious outcome. All the children contributed well and worked hard. The photographs show children writing. If I missed your photo this time I'll try to take it on my next visit. Lots of good ideas and discussion on how to improve writing.
The morning session with 10 children was productive. All the children participated fully, contributing ideas and asking questions of each other to really develop thinking. The children were wonderfully honest and open in their sharing as they each wrote a poem called..."My Special Place."
In our endeavour I forgot to take photos, sorry. I will try and remember in session 2. I based the session around a poem called My Special Place because of the structure. Starting with a description of how the author is in the place, then a description of the place then feelings about the place and finally summing up the place in a word. Poems were varied and heartfelt. Well done Broughton Moor I love it when someone finds a new confidence to speak out when they don't usually. It is exciting for staff and children and me!
I wrote this poem after the Junior Library session. I learned I have a voice today I didn't realise I had so much to say It was like crawling from the dark I found a roar, I found my bark I have been silent, felt apart Today I spoke words from my heart I realise I have a truth to tell And now I have the confidence as well I've always felt nobody cared Today I stood up straight and shared |
